I need a simple publishing program. pdf questions, too

I worked on Word and found it very frustrating. I used Appleworks many, many years ago. Is there anything similar out there?

Is QuarkExpress or Publisher? I put pictures and other graphics into the document and try to make it look attractive...

Also, when I saved the Word document as pdf it hugely enlarged the program.

Help!!
